Take the next step and transition from “buddy” to “boss.”

Regardless of the industry or size of the organization, the changing workforce spares no one. That’s why organizations today need to prepare and train their future leaders. Our Essential Skills program is delivered one day a month over five months and is designed to help individuals at the supervisory or first-time manager level. Participants will be introduced to our 10 core leadership competencies and to skills and concepts that will ease their transition towards effective leadership.  

What You’ll Learn

Participants will learn essential skills such as communication, motivating employees, dealing with difficult behaviours, time management, and others that will guide their leadership journey.

Understanding Your New Leadership Role 

  • Explore personal and team leadership
  • Identify and understand personality types, including your own, through different personality tests including DiSC­® or the personality theory of your choice, e.g. MBTI®
  • Examine your new role in relation to your organization

Learning to Lead a Team

  • Differentiate and apply the different levels of delegation and empowerment  
  • Recognize the importance of team leadership and utilize the stages of team development
  • Effectively deal with difficult behaviours

The Fundamentals of Communication

  • Determine the proper ways to conduct effective communication
  • Examine different barriers to communication and develop solutions to overcome them

How You’ll Learn

Many of our programs and individual courses are customizable to your organization’s needs. After meeting with one of our Business Development Officers and Training Design Specialists to identify exactly what those needs are, a course will be developed to bring the best out of your employees. Participants will take part in our engaging and interactive course designed with different learning styles in mind. Through an instructor-led discussion, individual and group activities, and real-life scenarios, participants will leave confident with their new knowledge.

Once back in the workplace, participants will be able to refer back to their participant guide and reflect on what they learned.

Where You’ll Learn

We work closely with our clients to ensure that we meet all your needs – this includes location. Courses can take place at our location within Mohawk College’s Stoney Creek campus or at any location of your choice. That means, if you’d like us to come to you – we will set up shop at your location of choice.

Who Should Attend

This program is designed for those transitioning into a supervisory position or supervisors who have not previously participated in formal training.
